Categories and Contents of MEXT Scholarship

Academic level Graduate level Undergraduate level
Qualification  Applicant must have graduated or will graduate from the universities.  Applicant must have graduated from the universities or teacher training schools.  Applicant must have completed a 12-year regular course of school education.  Applicants must be undergraduates at foreign universities at the time of arriving in and leaving Japan.
Age restriction Applicant must be under 35 years old.  Applicant must be over 17 years old but under 22 years old.  Applicant must be over 18 years old but under 30 years old. 
Japanese-language training  Half year
 If a grantee has sufficient Japanese proficiency to conduct research, he/she may be placed at the university without going through the Japanese-language training.
1 year
Professional education   A grantee performs the research in his/her filed of study in the graduate school.   A grantee takes the specific course for Teacher training students.  A grantee studies in the undergraduate course.   A grantee takes the specific course for Japanese studies students. 
Monthly stipend ¥143,000~¥145,000(JPY) ¥117,000(JPY)
School Fees Fees for matriculation, tuition and entrance examinations at a university will be paid by the Japanese government.
Traveling cost Round traveling cost between grantee's home country and Japan will be paid in the form of economy air ticket. 
Term of scholarship Within 2 years including a 6 months Japanese-language training period.  Within 1.5 years including a 6 months Japanese-language training period.  Within 5 years including a 1 year Japanese-language training period. (7 years for Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine) 1 year
Extension of term of scholarship

 

If a grantee desires to proceed to a regular graduate course from a Research Student course, or to a doctoral course from a master’s course, he/she may have the term of his/her scholarship extended upon successful examination by MEXT provided that he/she has outstanding academic achievement that meets certain criteria.
