Securing Residence for Overseas Students

From 1 Sep 2023, the university will no longer be guarantor for new external housing contracts.

Kagoshima University facilitates in the securing of accommodation for overseas students by acting as a co-signer at the time of initial rental, provided that they purchase the 'Comprehensive Renter's Insurance for Foreign Students Studying in Japan'. Please consult with the International Students Office of Kagoshima University.


1. Eligible Applicants
Applicants must meet all the requirements listed below;
① You must be qualified as a Kagoshima University student with college student visa.
② You must purchase the 'Comprehensive Renter's Insurance for Foreign Students Studying in Japan'.

2. Type of Residence
In principle, accommodation must be provided by a real estate agency that holds membership of The Kagoshima Real Estate Transaction Association and adheres to its policies.

3. Joint Guarantee
For the contract between you as tenant and your landlord, Kagoshima University signs as a joint guarantor for the terms below for the maximum of one year. If you decide to re-contract, you must purchase the above mentioned insurance again.
① Default of rent payment and charges for delay
② Expenditure incurred for restoring accommodation to its original status at the time of moving out. e.g.) new tatami mats, etc.
③ Cost of disposal of household articles at the time of returning home.

4. Contract Document
Applicants for this procedure must use the contract form provided by Kagoshiima University in the case of signing a contract with the landlord.

5. Necessary Documents
① Contract for renting accommodation (3 forms)
② Photocopy of student identification card
③ Photocopy of residence card (both front and back)
④ Photocopy of the receipt for the comprehensive renter's insurance

6.【Important】About the termination of new external housing contracts

From 1 Sep 2023, the university will no longer be guarantor for new external housing contracts. If you need a guarantor for housing contract, you could ask Kagoshima University Co-op Housing Office or real estate agents. If the university is currently your guarantor, there will be no change for your present contract.
