WORKSHOP

Prospects for living in Global World:

‘Human-Oriented Development’ and Political Stabilization in the Philippines and Beyond

This workshop aims at discussing development issues from multi-disciplinary perspectives.

Developing economy and democracy are critical for all countries in global world. The ways of economic and political developments are affected by historical, social and cultural factors. The Philippines, once seen as "Sick Man of Asia", has started to show strong signs to improve the economy and political conditions. The high economic growth rate has been maintained by solid consumptions powered by remittances from overseas workers and strong service industries such as BPO (Business Process Outsourcing). These strengths of the economy are different from “manufacturing miracles”. The Philippines is also seen as a recent successful case for peace negotiation with the Muslim militant groups. However, the country is still facing serious problems: widespread poverty, unemployment and elite dominance in democracy.  It is worth to seek implications for global development issues by examining economic and political matters in the Philippines and beyond." Global, national and regional constraints and inference in the process of economic, political and social development are particular interest of the workshop.

The workshop is scheduled on the 1st and 2nd of November, 2014 in the 508 A & 508 B (connected) room at Campus Innovation Center Tokyo. The 1st day session is open to those who registered in advance (maximum 20). The second day session is closed to the core research members.
