Message from the President
Kagoshima University traces its origins to the Hangaku Zoshikan School, which was established in 1773. After the merger of several higher education institutions, including the Seventh Higher School established during the Meiji period (1868-1912), Kagoshima University was newly established in 1949 as a national university. Since then, as the highest academic institution in southern Kyushu, Kagoshima University has consistently contributed numerous outstanding individuals to society, and our graduates are thriving in diverse fields both in Japan and internationally. Currently, Kagoshima University has nine faculties and nine graduate schools, with approximately 9,000 undergraduate students and 2,000 graduate students, including 300 international students. Across our three campuses, all of our students are engaged in deepening their knowledge as they prepare to spread their wings and achieve success on the global stage. Remaining faithful to the founding spirit of the Hangaku Zoshikan School, the university's mission is twofold: first, to contribute to society and the community by promoting academic freedom and diversity, while also supporting the spirit of self-sufficiency and enterprise; and second, to educate individuals who aspire to overcome challenges with a mindset of continuous self-improvement and contribute to global society. In line with this mission, we create a campus environment where students can focus on their studies. This includes promoting programs of studying and training abroad, volunteer activities and initiatives that embody and challenge the spirit of enterprise, and implementing scholarship and award systems to encourage students' motivation for self-improvement. |

Kagoshima serves as a southern gateway open to Asia and regions across the world. Historically, it has been contributed many individuals who took initiative in introducing diverse cultures through international exchange, cultivated a rich foundation of culture and scholarship, and played a leading role in driving Japan's transformation and modernization. In addition to the two World Natural Heritage sites, Yakushima and Amami-Oshima/Tokunoshima, Kagoshima is also home to part of the World Heritage Site, "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution." Surrounded by a privileged environment rich in nature, culture, and history, we strive to nurture individuals who cultivate the spirit of enterprise, grow as well-rounded human beings, and take pride and confidence in what they have learned at our university. We also aim to equip them with a global perspective that will enable them to thrive on the international stage.
Spanning 600 kilometers from north to south, Kagoshima Prefecture itself serves as an extended campus for our university. Deeply rooted in the region's nature, history, climate, and industries, we are committed to advancing together with you. Drawing on both academic knowledge and practical wisdom, and guided by the spirit of enterprise, we aim to become a hub of education and research that addresses the future of both our region and the wider world.
